Global Allergen Framework Tiers
Not all countries treat allergen labeling the same way. Our framework tiers classify countries by regulatory strength — helping you understand what level of protection to expect when dining abroad.
Understanding the Tiers
Gold Tier
Strict legal requirements with mandatory allergen labeling, trained staff, and penalties for non-compliance. The highest level of regulatory protection.
Silver Tier
Official guidelines with strong voluntary compliance, especially in tourist areas and major chains. Good allergen awareness but limited legal mandates.
Bronze Tier
Emerging allergen awareness with minimal formal requirements. Travelers should prepare translation cards and research venues in advance.

How We Classify Countries
Our framework tier classifications are based on five criteria:
- 1Legal Requirements — Do laws mandate allergen disclosure?
- 2Enforcement — Are there penalties for non-compliance?
- 3Industry Adoption — How widely are allergen practices implemented?
- 4Government Guidance — Are there official allergen labeling guidelines?
- 5On-Ground Reality — What do allergy travelers report about actual compliance?
We review and update classifications as regulations change. If you notice outdated information, please let us know.
Disclaimer: Framework tiers are for guidance only and do not guarantee safety. Always verify allergen information with venue staff, carry emergency medication, and consult your doctor before traveling with food allergies.
